PORTABLE FIREPLACE
“The Portable Fireplace is a tool designed to help utopians survive in their natural habitat.”
The Portable Fireplace was a collaborative design that involved designing tools that would represent the fundamentals of our ideal utopia. This design was based on our group's concept of going back to fundamental needs in order to re-establish human survival instincts. This includes the need to produce fire in order to cook food or stay warm etc. The object features a cylindrical shape that is characterised by a pleated surface and a hole in the middle of the tool. This would allow utopians to generate a fire when the cylinder is stretched and distinguish it when the cylinder is compressed. The left image was an early prototype of my design, the middle image was a poster demonstrating how to use the tool and the image on the right was 3D printed model of my design.
Our group's designs were linked through an overarching theme of natural elements such as fire, water, earth and wind. Hence each tool was developed to allow the user to utilise a specific element.
