UTOPIAN LETTERS
PURPOSE FOR UTOPIAN LETTERS
I designed my Utopian letters for a futuristic utopia. I envision my utopian to incorporate the nostalgia of the past and the minimalistic style of the future. Furthermore, my utopia will have a universal alphabet and language hence the symmetry of my letterforms.
INSPIRATION FOR CONCEPT
The concept behind my letters was to combine the past and future together. I was inspired by how the sixties imagined the future and how it is portrayed in the film, Tron. The sixties space age used lots of patterns and vibrant colours whilst we presently portray the future as minimalistic and monochrome.
GENERIC AND SPECIAL FEATURES
Most of the letters are symmetrical and feature clean edges. Most of the letters feature more than one element and give a sense of movement.
WRITING SYSTEM
My Utopian letters are similar to the latin alphabet in that it comes in upper and lower case. However instead of changing the letterform its case is determined by whether the letter is above or below the line, above for upper case and below for lower case.
GRAPHIC AND LETTERFORMS
Across my double page compositions I have alternated between vibrant colours and monochrome to illustrate the fusion between sixties space age and our current idea of the future. Every page is designed so that each image correlates with the accompanying letterforms. Furthermore, on every second page, the colour of the shaded letter on each page matches the colour of the opposite image.
